PNZ HIGH PERFORMANCE NEWS - EDITION 2
Welcome to the second
edition of Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) High Performance News. The purpose of
this is to share information about what is happening within the PNZ High
Performance Programme and better inform you of items of interest to you.
SPARC 2011 – 2012 Investment
On 2nd December 2010 the Paralympics New Zealand (PNZ) 2011 – 2012 High
Performance Plan was presented to SPARC in Auckland. The purpose of this
presentation was to:
· Demonstrate to SPARC the true cost of implementing a Paralympic High
Performance programme
· Request investment from SPARC through to December 2012
· Demonstrate to SPARC what they could expect as a return on their investment
Based upon sport campaigns, IPP’s and the PNZ 2011 - 2012 High Performance Plan
PNZ applied for $2.26million in 2011 and $2.0million in 2012. As a result of
this application PNZ received $1.4million High Performance Investment from SPARC
for 2011 and $1.5million High Performance Investment from SPARC for 2012. This
is a considerable increase in investment to Paralympics New Zealand to implement
a High Performance programme in comparison to previous years and can be regarded
as a signal from SPARC that Paralympic Sport is important to New Zealand.
However, as the investment allocated to PNZ does not meet the requested amount
PNZ is now working with Programme Managers and Sport Specific Programme
Directors to identify where changes can be made to budgets so that investment
aligns with the SPARC allocation. It was our intention initially to be able to
confirm 2011 investment with athletes and programme personnel by January 14
however due to the extra work associated with re-budgeting this has now been
extended through to February 1.
PNZ London Selection Criteria
The PNZ London Selection Criteria document is almost complete with the aim of
having this made available to sports by mid February. Once this is confirmed
sport specific selection criteria’s will follow. However it can be communicated
now that the ‘Over-Riding Paralympics New Zealand London Selection Criteria’
will be
Paralympics New Zealand has two over-riding selection criteria.
Primary selection criterion: The Panel must be satisfied that the nominated
Athlete has the capability to medal in London 2012.
Secondary selection criterion: The Panel must be satisfied that the nominated
Athlete has the potential to medal in Rio 2016 and the capability to achieve a
top six placing in London 2012.
NZAS Carding
The new carding round will take place from early February 2011. Athletes who
demonstrate they are on track to meet the London Selection Criteria and have
signed a PNZ Athlete Agreement will be carded. Due to World Championship events
being at different times of the year for sports carding will align with these
events. The carding process will include
· Rolling over existing carded athletes who demonstrate they are on track to
meet the PNZ London Selection Criteria.
· Carding of new athletes not carded previously but have demonstrated through
performance they are on track to meet the PNZ London Selection Criteria.
· De-Carding of previously carded athletes who have demonstrated through
performance they are not on track to meet the PNZ London Selection Criteria.
As part of this process athletes will also be advised as to what services they
have been allocated.

carding process

PNZ Athlete Commission
Paralympics New Zealand believes it is critical that athletes have a median in
which they can ask questions, present ideas, or raise issues in a non
intimidating environment. Therefore PNZ plan to further develop the current
Athlete’s Commission with which all contracted PNZ athletes would have access
to. Fiona Pickering, Chief Executive will review how effective the current
Athletes Commission is prior to this development.
Current athletes on the PNZ Athletes commission are Tim Prendergast, Matt Slade
and Tim Johnson. Tim Johnson is also a representative on the NZOC Athletes
Commission.
