Kiwis prep for Invictus Battle

Twenty-one members of the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF) are preparing for battle, as they train to compete in the May 2016 Invictus Games, held in Orlando, Florida.

Instigated in 2014 by His Royal Highness Prince Harry, the Invictus Games provide an international stage that unites wounded, ill, and injured service men and women from around the world who are active duty or veteran, in ten adaptive sports.

David Sherriff, NZDF Invictus Team Captain says: “It is a great honour and responsibility to captain the NZDF Invictus team a second time, particularly as we have within our team members who are, have been, or will become leaders in their respective careers.”

“The Invictus Games is much more than a sports event. It will bring together current and retired military personnel from 15 nations, who were injured, wounded or developed an illness while serving their country. While some individuals and teams will be awarded medals, the true reward of these games is the effect it has on the lives of those who compete,” David says.

In the lead up to the Games, the NZDF team has released a short video which showcases their kiwi fighting spirit in their bid to bring back gold.

The Invictus Games takes place at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida 8–12 May, 2016. Sports include: Athletics, Archery, Swimming, Power Lifting, Road Cycling, Indoor Rowing, Wheelchair Rugby, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Tennis, and Sitting Volleyball.

Over 500 competitors from 15 countries are expected to take part.
